Zakiya earned her LL.B. at the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom, graduating with First Class Honours. While in law school, she worked as a student advisor with the university’s Pro Bono Group where she worked on cases relating to immigration, wills and estates, and family law. Upon returning to Canada, she obtained her LL.M. at Osgoode Hall Law School. She completed her articles at a boutique family law firm in Toronto, where she continued practicing as a lawyer upon her call to the bar in 2020.

Prior to joining Nathens, Siegel, Zakiya advocated on behalf of family law clients at a full-service law firm in Toronto. Zakiya has extensive litigation experience in divorce and separation, including in decision-making responsibility (custody), parenting time (access), support, property, and child protection proceedings. She has appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice in Ontario, and although her practice is taking her to the courtroom often for conferences, motions and trials, she also uses collaborative and alternative processes to reach agreements that are mutually beneficial for all parties involved.

Zakiya adopts a sensible approach when reviewing litigation matters or negotiating settlements, and does not shy away from confrontation in order to ensure her clients receive the best possible solutions.  Zakiya understands the stress that comes with needing a family law lawyer and works to make this difficult time go smoothly with compassion and expertise. She is considerate, yet realistic when advising clients.

Outside of the office she enjoys spending her time baking, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
